Let it out! [Oct. 21st, 2007|06:00 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

Today I want to challenge you to let your stories emerge.

Do not try and control or pre-empt a story. Many of us were taught to structure our writing – ‘it must have a beginning, a middle and an end.’ – what nonsense!

Just write and see what happens.

Ruth Tearle shared a lot of her daily musings with me when she was writing ‘Blackboards, Bubbles and Cappuccinos’ (See www.ruthtearle.com)

We would chat briefly in the morning and she would send me her latest addition every evening. This was at a time when she was pushing to complete the book.

I could not wait for the next chapter to arrive each evening and I would eagerly download email late at night to get the next episode in the unfolding drama.

‘What’s going to happen next.’ I would quip to try and elicit the story out of her in our morning chat.

Surely she must know where this is going? Why couldn’t she tell me?

‘I don’t know,’ was her stock answer, ‘I’ll wait to see what presents itself.’

Amazing

So - be like Ruth!

Do not decide on the content, characters or structure of your story.

Let the story write itself and see what happens.

You may just be surprised.

Structure

Mandy, i usually allow my characters to surprise me - they take me wherever they wish me to go, however, where once upon a time i controlled them as i would a naughty child, i now simply follow them wherever they take me without scolding them.

I have been told in all the writing courses - plan plan plan! I just cannot. I don't want to know what the next paragraph will tellmy reader. I wrote The Weeping (the picture of a bridge) in just such a way and i'm glad you liked it (smile).

Planning's not for me. Especially the short story. I do tend to start planning my novels in the middle of the novel, not at the beginning.

Now, with NANOWRIMO coming up, it seems a perfect opportunity to get the second novel out.

I've called it Murder is a Drag: a friend laughed but suggested, Drag is Murder - which do you prefer?

Respect

Louis

Hi Louis, I am glad you have the courage to let things happen. It can be a scary place for many people. But it is the space of true creativity and that is where the magic happens. While I think there are some very innovatve teachers who inspire their pupils to create, I think a lot of creativity is also crushed in the education process. Keep creating and share some of the products with us
